Teen tired of hallway racism started her own t-shirt brandīut it wasn’t until she read the book that she really understood the significance of what happened when the community was bulldozed.Sofia said she learned about what happened in Africville briefly in school. (Image credit: Groundwood Books)Īfricville, by Nova Scotian author Shauntay Grant, is about a girl who visits the area where the settlement used to be. The book Africville, by Nova Scotian author Shauntay Grant, is about a Black community in Halifax that was destroyed in the 1960s. The vibrant Black settlement in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was destroyed by the government in the 1960s. When CBC Kids News asked Sofia and two other Canadian kids to recommend pop culture picks in honour of Black History Month, Sofia chose a book about Africville. “It’s really important for everyone to know their histories and for these histories to be known and shared,” said the 13-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alberta. When it comes to recommending a favourite book, Sofia Rathjen suggests picking up a story about an important piece of Canadian history that you don’t know about. He lived a peaceful and happy life in his hometown Bai Hua village.Īll was well until, one day, a powerful general with an evil plan paid a visit to Bai Hua village. He had the greatest dream to be an artist. Plot: A young and kind peasant boy named Ma Liang loved drawing and drew pictures everywhere. And some humor may not land well with an audience that is not familiar with Chinese language and culture. Warning: The animation can be choppy in places. The series’ New Year-themed movies are no exception. These were not worth the space in my luggage! Too much grownup humor and pointless action sequences that glorify aggressive behavior. Since these shows seemed to be popular in China a few years ago, I carried home boxes of DVDs for my sons.

Some movies may have received much hype in China, but don't hold their appeal for audiences in the West. Those movies include the following two that I do NOT recommend: The Boonie Bears series 熊出没 (xióng chū mò) and The Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf series 喜羊羊与灰太狼 ( xǐ yáng yáng yǔ huī tài láng ). Some good original Chinese animation movies like the 小金刚 (xiǎo jīn gāng) Little Monkey in the Big Apple, when "imported" to the United States, have been dubbed with English voice-over. Unfortunately, it is not all straightforward or easy to find Chinese movies to watch, even if you are willing to pay! If you search for Children’s Chinese movies on YouTube, you will very likely come up with a confusing hodgepodge of movies.
